Polyethylene Material

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the largest volume thermoplastics used today and is available in a wide range of grades and formulations (commonly grouped into Low, Medium and High density). The various formulations impart a wide range of properties to the polymer making it appropriate for countless application.

Polyethylene was first synthesized by the German chemist Hans von Pechmann by accident in 1898 while heating diazomethane the resulting white, waxy, substance having long CH2 chains was called polymethylene.

The first practical polyethylene synthesis was discovered by accident in 1933 by applying extremely high pressure (several hundred atmospheres) to a mixture of ethylene and benzaldehyde. In 1935 Michael Perrin, developed this into a reproducible high-pressure synthesis for polyethylene that became the basis for industrial LDPE production beginning in 1939.

In the polymer industry the name is sometimes shortened to PE, polyethylene is created through polymerization of ethene. Polyethylene is classified into several different categories based mostly on its density and branching.

  • Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE)
  • Ultra low molecular weight polyethylene (ULMW PE-WAX)
  • High molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE)
  • High density polyethylene (HDPE)
  • High density cross-linked polyethylene (HDXLPE)
  • Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)
  • Medium density polyethylene (MDPE)
  • Low density polyethylene (LDPE)
  • Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)
  • Very low density polyethylene (VLDPE)

Characteristics
• Extremely lightweight & durable;
• Good electrical properties, low friction coefficient;
• Easy to fabricate, chemical, corrosion & moisture resistant;

Industry Applications
Scientific, military & government specifications, medical, laboratory, industrial, construction or commercial use.
